Over 500 years ago people who possessed little more than the clothes on their backs and who suffered in ways that would be hard to even imagine for most of us, created a remarkable art form in response to the persisting problem of slavery, oppression, and coercion. Although banned, criminalized, and marginalized for many years, this art has spread wide and far since colonial times in Brazil and can now be found all over the world. Capoeira has been well known for its vibrant, rebellious, fluent, uniting, creative and effective nature in the old days. Why not apply it right now to tackle the current version of divide and conquer and alleviate its symptoms of ill-health, deceit, dependency, isolation, and fear? After more than two decades of learning and teaching how to use this amazing martial art\/dance\/culture I have been finding freedom in more ways than I ever expected.
